Malaga: Fiestas and Folklore
Malaga is a town of extraordinary vitality and
the visitor is certain to find it a very lively place to visit. Among the many
wonderful events (Fiestas) throughout the year, the following are most memorable
and should not be missed if you are in Malaga at the time
January 6th is the procession of The Three Magi, an event especially
appreciated by children as they represent the bearers of gifts and the children
anxiously await their presents.
Easter Week (Semana Santa) is a very big celebration in Malaga as well as
most of the large Andalusian towns. The sights not to be missed are the most
impressive religious processions, the most remarkable being the processions of
Senor de los Gitanos on Monday and the Nuestro Padre Jesus el Rico on Wednesday.
The celebration of Corpus Christi in the month of May is most beautiful
in the Village of Casabermeja, very close to Malaga. The entire village is
decorated with flowers and the Fiesta goes on for four days.
Malaga celebrates the annual and very traditional Feria de Verano during
the third week in August with both daytime events in the City and night time
events in a new Feria Park just outside of the City. This “all day, all night
party” is complete with colourful regional clothing by men and women, Flamenco
and Sevillana dancing, music, food, wine, laughter and so much more…..not to be
missed!
December 28th is the ”Dia de Los Santos
Inocentes”. An extraordinary event takes place as numerous people come
together in a traditional and local Venta del Tunel to dance Flamenco all
through the night until they collapse in total exhaustion.
And finally, you must remember that Malaga is a non-stop town come summer and is
well known for it’s “locos veranos” (crazy summers), especially at it’s
many infamous beaches. But, all through the year you can find a very lively
nightlife as going out in the evening is a very Andalusian way of life, just
like Flamenco! In the following areas of Malaga, there is something to suit
everyone’s taste:
ZONA EL PALO
Along the beautiful beachfront promenade you will find many fish restaurants
serving fashionable locals. During the warm summer nights, the terraces here are
an ideal starting point to begin exploring Malaga by night.
ZONA LA MALAGUETA
A more modern part of town, here you will find the “younger fashionable| locals
enjoying the evening.
ZONA PEDRAGALEJO
This part of town is famous for it’s many pubs as well as traditional bars and
restaurants and a great place to enjoy the classical Andalusian kitchen!
